DOUBLE  DISHCLOTH

Here we GO!!! Our lesson for January will be Crochet on the Double!!! I have written up detailed directions below for you to print out and start on your project. Please keep in mind that I am learning too!! I have never done Crochet on the Double before so if you find a mistake please let me know by send me a message at: mcairns@skyhighsoft.com

We are going to make a dishcloth for our first project. This is called the BASIC CRO-HOOK AFGHAN STITCH  You will need 2 different light colored cotton yarns, and a double ended J hook. If you cant find a J hook you can use whatever size you can find, the size of the hook is not critical as we are making a dishcloth. I suggest light colored yarns because it is much easier for you to see your stitches.

I am fully illustrating all the steps to make it as easy as possible for you to learn. I am left handed but I have reversed all of my pictures so I am hoping that the picture look correct to all of you who are right handed. If the picture don't look correct please let me know  and I will try and figure something out. mcairns@skyhighsoft.com

This dish cloth has 2 basic steps working loops on to the hook and working loops off the hook.

The dish cloth will be worked this way:

Note my main color is yellow (MC) and contrasting color is green (CC) , I will be referring to these colors when I am writing, you don't have to use yellow and green colors. These colors showed up really well in my picture. DO NOT CUT THE YARN!!!

Step 1  ----with your main color chain 30, insert hook in 2nd chain from hook, yo and draw through, this will create a loop, you will leave this loop on your hook.  (Insert hook in next ch, yo and draw through) you will continue this until you have worked the entire ch at the end you will have 30 loops on your hook. Below (Illustration 1 ) is what your hook should look like after Row 1. Drop (MC) and TURN YOUR WORK.

Step 2 ----   This row is worked on the opposite end of the hook -  place your contrasting color yarn on the hook with a slip knot, (right hander will work left to right------- left hander will work from right to left)  YO hook and draw through 2 loops on hook, one of each color yarn ( see Illustration 2  below, I have 1 green loop (CC) on the hook I am going to yarn over my hook and draw it through the green loop (CC) and the yellow loop (MC) that is next to the green loop) continue this across until you have only a green loop on your hook see Illustration 3 below. DO NOT TURN!!!

Step 3 -----  Right handers you are now working right to left -----Left handers you are now working left to right) Pick up your green yarn (CC)  and  skip the first vertical bar of your (MC) yarn and inset hook in the 2nd vertical bar  (Illustration 4 - note the first yellow vertical bar is skipped and my hook is in the 2nd yellow bar ) now you will YO hook and draw the green (CC) through the yellow vertical bar ONLY--- Do not bring it through the green loop that is already on the hook , you will now have 2 green loops on the hook, continue this across until you have 29 green loops on your hook, for the last stitch you will insert your hook into the 2 vertical yellow bars, yo and draw yarn under  both vertical bars . You will now have 30 loops on your hook Drop (CC) green yarn and  TURN YOUR WORK.

Step 4 -  Using yellow (MC) yo and draw through one loop on hook (this loop will be (CC)  green), * YO and draw through the next 2 loops on hook (one will be (MC) and one will be (CC) * repeat form *to * till the end, 1 loop of your (MC) will be on your hook DO NOT TURN!!

Step 5 - Pick up your yellow yarn (MC)  and  skip the first vertical bar of your (CC)  green yarn and insert hook in the 2nd vertical  green bar,  now you will YO hook and draw the yellow (MC) through the green vertical bar ONLY--- Do not bring it through the yellow loop that is already on the hook , you will now have 2 yellow loops on the hook, continue this across until you have 29 yellow loops on your hook, for the last stitch you will insert your hook into the 2 vertical green bars that are together and YO hook and draw yarn under both green bars. (see Illustration 9 the blue hook is pointing to the 2 green vertical bars)  Drop (MC) yellow yarn and  TURN YOUR WORK.

Step 6 - Using green (CC) yo and draw through one loop on hook (this loop will be (MC)  yellow), * YO and draw through the next 2 loops on hook (one will be (MC) and one will be (CC) * repeat form *to * till the end,  1 loop of your (CC) green will be on your hook DO NOT TURN!!

Step 7Pick up your  your green yarn (CC)  and  skip the first vertical bar of your (MC) yarn and insert hook in the 2nd vertical bar , now you will YO hook and draw the green (CC) through the yellow vertical bar ONLY--- Do not bring it through the green loop that is already on the hook , you will now have 2  green loops on the hook, continue this across until you have 29 green loops on your hook,  for the last stitch you will insert your hook in to the 2 vertical yellow bars that are together and YO hook and draw the yarn under both yellow bars. Drop (CC) green yarn and  TURN YOUR WORK.

This is what my piece looks like on each side after a few rows are worked.

You will repeat rows 4-7 until your piece is about 7 inches tall. DO NOT FASTEN OFF YARN!

Finishing your dishcloth:

When you get to having just one loop on your hook, choose what color you would like to edge your cloth with. I chose yellow. Fasten off your green and sc evenly around the entire cloth working 3 sc in each corner. If you want to get FUN!! do not fasten off either color, work sc around edge using yellow on 2 sides and going in the opposite direction sc around edge using green on 2 sides working 3 sc in each corner.
